Special Education refers to the integrated process used to get through the deficiencies or misadjustments of a regular educational system for the preparation of people with special educational needs, all through activities and individualized attention that allows them to receive an adequate and inclusive educational treatment and attain a full development in their abilities
Centro Maya has a Special Education area for users from 7 years onwards with special educational needs that need to potentiate their learning and reinforce therapies. We work with users from the labor and social inclusion program, users integrated in public schools, users with special educational needs and some others whose academic performance has been influenced by risk situations such as sexual abuse or interfamilial violence.
In Guatemala, public services in general are deficient due to the misuse of resources and an inefficient structure from the authorities, being the access to education one of the biggest obstacles in the development of Guatemalan people. Being able to get Special Education is even more complicated, especially for the people living in rural parts of the country, since there aren't enough institutions specialized in this area, and if there are, they are usually privately funded and people without resources can't access them.
This is why Centro Maya, in order to attend the special educational needs of the children and young adults of the community, works with the users by implementing a dynamic process that utilizes material, methodological, curricular and professional means according to the specific needs of each user, allowing them to achieve their personal autonomy and social integration.
