An early intervention in stimulation in order to maximize skills and develop abilities is very important for a person with a disability, this is why we work with children from 0 to 6 years old, age in which neuroplasticity is at its highest stage, allowing better results in the development of new abilities.
Early stimulation focuses on the children environmental exploration, that many times is slowed down for several reasons like physical or intellectual conditions which difficult this exploration; excessive care from the parents out of fear of their child being hurt or damaged in some way, and little knowledge from parents about their child’s disabilities that keeps them from properly stimulating them.
In Guatemalan rural communities little or no stimulation at all for children is very common due to conditions of families living in poverty and lack of knowledge in this subject. For children with disabilities this situation is even more complicated since they are usually kept from connecting with their environment in a usual way by being confined to their homes and sometimes even to only one room.
This is why Centro Maya has an Early Stimulation program in which we provide therapies based on games and movement to foment motor, intellectual, emotional, social and creative abilities through children’s own stimulation in a controlled environment. We include the parents in some of theses therapies so that they can learn to do this activities at home and so that they can leave their fears behind and explore together.
